Communication Group
What is a communication group?
My communication groups are designed to provide a calm and supportive environment where children can develop their communication skills at their own pace. I keep the group sizes small to ensure that each child feels comfortable, allowing for more focused and individualised attention. This approach helps create a low-pressure setting, which is particularly beneficial for children who may feel overwhelmed in larger, busier environments.
Each session is child-centred and built around their interests, helping to engage them in ways that are natural and meaningful. I use a range of communication strategies to support and encourage every child, whether they are verbal or non-verbal. By incorporating play into my approach, children have the freedom to express themselves and explore new ways of communicating in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
What happens during the session?
The session begins with free play, during which I spend one-on-one time with each child, engaging with them through their chosen activities. During this time, I model key communication strategies, helping both the child and their family learn new ways to enhance their interactions. By embedding these strategies into play, children can learn in a natural and fun context, making it easier to practise and apply the skills outside of the session.
My sessions conclude with bucket time and singing, using visual aids to support understanding and engagement. Bucket time is a structured activity designed to capture the children’s attention and promote listening and turn-taking. The use of visual aids during singing time further supports communication, helping children understand the words and actions, making the experience both enjoyable and beneficial.
What strategies do you use?
I use strategies from speech and language therapists: ready steady go, intensive interaction, visual aids, communication boards and bucket time. Each child is unique and will be at different stages. It may take your child a few sessions to get used to the session. I will observe at first and only approach your child when they are ready. I have a warm, nurturing approaching and will only go by the Childs lead. I use children's interests as a way of engaging them through play.
